En 1897, la Canadian Copper Company (plus tard connue sous le nom d’INCO) a acheté les terres entourant le gisement minéral revendiqué pour la première fois en 1856 par l’arpenteur A.P. Salter. St. Michael’s n’avait pas de prêtre à plein temps résidant à Creighton jusqu’en 1936, lorsque le père J. Emmett Regan a pris ses fonctions pastorales à St. Michael’s. Il s’est installé dans l’église cette année-là. Le père Regan est resté curé de la paroisse jusqu’à sa mort en 1976. Après son décès, son corps a été exposé à St. Michael’s afin que les paroissiens puissent lui rendre hommage. La file des paroissiens était interminable. Des non-catholiques sont également venus, car le père Regan était une figure très appréciée dans la ville. Le week-end du 28 septembre 1986, les prêtres de St. Michael’s — le père Sharpe, le père Hutton, le père Fortune et le père Bourgon —, les sœurs de la paroisse et les Chevaliers de Colomb du Conseil 3909 ont entamé trois jours de cérémonies solennelles pour fermer l’église, tous en grande pompe.

Les grandes statues ont été laborieusement descendues les nombreuses marches de l’église et placées dans des camions qui attendaient. Elles ont ensuite été lentement transportées jusqu’à l’église catholique la plus proche, St. Pius X à Lively, à environ trois kilomètres de là. In 1897, the Canadian Copper Company (later known as INCO) purchased the land surrounding the mineral deposit first claimed in 1856 by land surveyor A.P. Salter. After the Canadian Pacific Railway built a rail line through the area, the mining company began prospecting.

In 1900, they established a mining camp and started developing a mine. They named the mine and camp Creighton. The first ore was shipped in 1901.

In support of its workers, the mining company began establishing various services, including a post office in 1902, a school in 1904, and a doctor’s office in 1911.

To serve the needs of Catholic miners and their families, INCO leased land to the diocese, which built St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church in 1916.

St. Michael’s did not have a full-time priest living in Creighton until 1936, when Father J. Emmett Regan took on pastoral responsibilities at St. Michael’s. He moved into the church that year. Father Regan remained the parish priest until his death in 1976. After his death, his body was laid in state at St. Michael’s so that parishioners could pay their respects. The line of parishioners was unending. Non-Catholics came as well because Father Regan was a beloved figure in the town. Various priests ministered to the community for the next ten years.

At the height of Creighton’s history, the town’s population was over 2,000. In the mid-1960s, the population fell below 2,000, and by the 1980s, it was under 800.

Not wanting to spend money on maintaining a town, INCO finally gave Creighton’s residents notice that they had to vacate their homes by June 30, 1988. By 1986, repairs to the town’s water and sewer infrastructure had become critical, so the timeline for residents to vacate the town was moved up by two years.

Like all the buildings in Creighton, the land that St. Michael’s occupied was owned by INCO. Therefore, the church did not escape the need to vacate the town.

On the weekend of September 28, 1986, the St. Michael’s priests—Father Sharpe, Father Hutton, Father Fortune, and Father Bourgon—the parish sisters, and the Knights of Columbus Council 3909 began three days of solemn ceremonies to close the church, all in full regalia.

The large statues were laboriously carried down the church’s many steps and placed in waiting trucks. They were then slowly transported to the nearest Catholic church, St. Pius X in Lively, about two miles away. Upon arrival, the statues were carefully unloaded and carried into the church. The procession down the highway was sad but memorable. The church’s bell was also transported to Lively, where it now sits outside St. Pius Church.

Soon after, bulldozers moved in and demolished the entire town, including St. Michael’s Church.

Lorsque vous choisissez un parrain ou une marraine, n’oubliez pas que le parrain ou la marraine du candidat sera son mentor, son confident et son guide tout au long de son parcours de confirmation, l’aidant à grandir dans sa foi avant et après la cérémonie. Votre parrain ou marraine doit être une personne disposée à assister aux cours de confirmation avec le candidat et à y participer activement.

Confirmation information

Every two (2) years, the Catholic Parishes of Onaping Falls and Cartier celebrates the Sacrament of Confirmation for students in grades 7 and 8. The preparation for Confirmation classes typically commences in September and takes place at the parish hall of St. Bartholomew’s Church in Levack.

If your student is in Grade 7 or 8, please contact the Parish office to register your child for Confirmation. If your child is a student at St-Étienne-Martyr School in Dowling, you do not need to call and register. You will have the opportunity to register at the school in September.

Adults wishing to prepare and receive the Sacrament of Confirmation are also welcome to contact the parish.

The next Confirmation Class will start in 2027.

When contacting the Parish office to register as a candidate, please have the following information ready;

Candidate

Name of candidate receiving the sacrament;
Date of birth of the candidate receiving the sacrament;
Address of the candidate receiving the sacrament;
Date the candidate was baptized and the name of the parish that the baptism took place; and
- Note: if the candidate was not baptized in the Catholic Parishes of Onaping Falls and Cartier, a copy of the candidate’s baptism certificate will be required.
Telephone number and email address if the candidate is over 18 years of age.

Parents of the Candidate

Name and telephone number of the candidate’s father;
Name (maiden name) and telephone number of the candidate’s mother;
Contact e-mail address for the parents of the candidate (if a minor);

Godparent or Sponsor

Name of Godparent or Sponsor;
Telephone number of Godparent or Sponsor;
City and Parish Name where the Godparent or Sponsor was baptized; and
City and Parish Name where the Godparent or Sponsor was confirmed;

Notes;

The Godparent or Sponsor must provide a copy of their baptism certificate and confirmation details if they were not baptized or confirmed in the Catholic Parishes of Onaping Falls and Cartier. When contacting your parish to request a copy of your baptism certificate, ask the Parish to include the confirmation details.
A parent of the Candidate cannot be a Sponsor.
Aunts, uncles, siblings, other relatives, or a personal friend over the age of 16 and have received the Sacrament of Confirmation in the Catholic Church may be a Sponsor.
A Sponsor must be a practicing Catholic. If your Sponsor is married, they must be married in accordance with the regulations of the Catholic Church.

Remarques:

Être parrain ou marraine, c’est bien plus qu’un simple honneur lors du baptême d’une personne. Le rôle d’un parrain ou d’une marraine est de continuer à prendre soin et à élever dans la foi catholique la personne baptisée si les parents ne sont plus en mesure de le faire. C’est une responsabilité qui ne doit pas être prise à la légère. Idéalement, dans le cas du baptême d’une personne mineure, les parents devraient prendre des dispositions légales pour s’assurer que la garde soit confiée aux parrains et marraines si quelque chose leur arrivait.

C’est pourquoi les règles suivantes s’appliquent au sein de l’Église en ce qui concerne le choix des parrains et marraines

Au moins l’un des parrains ou marraines doit être catholique romain baptisé et confirmé.
Les certificats de baptême et de confirmation sont exigés pour chaque parrain ou marraine catholique.
Si le deuxième parrain ou marraine est catholique baptisé, mais n’a pas reçu le sacrement de confirmation, il sera inscrit comme TÉMOIN dans le registre paroissial. Une copie du certificat de baptême est exigée.

The following information is required when calling the parish to inquire about a baptism.

The date for which you wish the baptism to take place;
The church you are looking for the baptism to be held (St. Francis Xavier, St. Bartholomew, or St. Stephen Martyr);
The language you wish to be used at the baptism (english, french, or bilingual);
Name of person, date and place of birth of the person to be baptized;
Copy of the birth certificate for the person being baptized;
Father’s information:
- Full Name, address, and telephone number.
- Is the father Catholic or Non Catholic?
- A copy of the father’s baptismal certificate, if possible;
Mother’s information:
- Full maiden name, address, and telephone number.
- Is the mother Catholic, or Non Catholic?
- A copy of the mother’s baptismal certificate, if possible;
Marriage Information:
- Name of the church where parent’s marriage took place
- Was the marriage a Catholic Marriage or Non Catholic Marriage?
- Location of the church;
Parents Home Parish (Name of church);
- Note: If you live outside of the pastoral charge area of the Catholic Parishes of Onaping Falls and Cartier, you will require a permission letter from the Parish which has pastoral charge of your home address.
Godmother’s information (see notes below):
- Is the Godmother a baptized Catholic? Received the Sacrament of Confirmation?
- Name of Godmother; and
Godfather’s information (see notes below):
- Is the Godfather a baptized Catholic? Received the Sacrament of Confirmation?

Notes:

Being a Godparent is much more than a position of honor at a person’s baptism. The role of a Godparent is to continue the care and Catholic upbringing of the person being baptized in the event that the parents are no longer able to do so. It is a responsibility that should not be taken lightly. Ideally, in the case of an underage person being baptized, legal provisions should be made by the parents to ensure custody is given to the Godparents should something happen to the parents.

For this reason, the following rules apply within the Church with respect to the naming of Godparents

1. At least one of the godparents must be a baptized and confirmed Roman Catholic.
2. Baptism and Confirmation certificates are required for each godparent that is Catholic
3. If the second godparent is a baptized Catholic, but has not received the Sacrament of Confirmation, they will be registered as a WITNESS in the parish registry. A copy of the baptism certificate is required.
4. The second godparent may be baptized in another Trinitarian Christian denomination (Anglican, United Church, etc.). A copy of their baptismal certificate is required. They will be registered as a WITNESS in the parish registry.
5. Where two godparents are requested, the godparents must be a man and a woman.
6. Where one godparent is requested, a second person may be a WITNESS, regardless of gender.
7. If the person being baptized has a legal guardian, the guardian cannot be a godparent.
8. A person who does not profess their faith is God (i.e. an atheist) cannot be a godparent or a witness.

Sainte-Anne-des-Pins Mission Pastors

Entre 1883 et 1925, la région située entre Sudbury et Chapleau relève de la paroisse Sainte-Anne-des-Pins de Sudbury. Sainte-Anne-des-Pins établit des églises de mission tout au long de la ligne de chemin de fer du CP entre Sudbury et Chapleau, y compris à Cartier et à Biscotasing. Sainte-Anne-des-Pins Mission Pastors

Between 1883 and 1925, the area between Sudbury and Chapleau fell under the pastoral care of Sainte-Anne-des-Pins Parish in Sudbury. Sainte-Anne-des-Pins established mission churches all along the CPR rail line between Sudbury and Chapleau, including Cartier and Biscotasing. The number of priests were few, however, they managed to provide Sunday Mass in each area at least once a month. The following is a list of priests that served the area between Sudbury and Chapleau.
