St. Michael’s n’avait pas de prêtre à plein temps résidant à Creighton jusqu’en 1936, lorsque le père J. Emmett Regan a pris ses fonctions pastorales à St. Michael’s. Les grandes statues ont été laborieusement descendues les nombreuses marches de l’église et placées dans des camions qui attendaient. Elles ont ensuite été lentement transportées jusqu’à l’église catholique la plus proche, St. Pius X à Lively, à environ trois kilomètres de là. À leur arrivée, les statues ont été soigneusement déchargées et transportées à l’intérieur de l’église. La procession sur l’autoroute était triste mais mémorable. La cloche de l’église a également été transportée à Lively, où elle se trouve désormais à l’extérieur de l’église St. Pius.

In 1897, the Canadian Copper Company (later known as INCO) purchased the land surrounding the mineral deposit first claimed in 1856 by land surveyor A.P. Salter. After the Canadian Pacific Railway built a rail line through the area, the mining company began prospecting.
In 1900, they established a mining camp and started developing a mine. They named the mine and camp Creighton. The first ore was shipped in 1901.
In support of its workers, the mining company began establishing various services, including a post office in 1902, a school in 1904, and a doctor’s office in 1911.
To serve the needs of Catholic miners and their families, INCO leased land to the diocese, which built St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church in 1916.
St. Michael’s did not have a full-time priest living in Creighton until 1936, when Father J. Emmett Regan took on pastoral responsibilities at St. Michael’s. He moved into the church that year. Father Regan remained the parish priest until his death in 1976. After his death, his body was laid in state at St. Michael’s so that parishioners could pay their respects. The line of parishioners was unending. Non-Catholics came as well because Father Regan was a beloved figure in the town. Various priests ministered to the community for the next ten years.
At the height of Creighton’s history, the town’s population was over 2,000. In the mid-1960s, the population fell below 2,000, and by the 1980s, it was under 800.
Not wanting to spend money on maintaining a town, INCO finally gave Creighton’s residents notice that they had to vacate their homes by June 30, 1988. By 1986, repairs to the town’s water and sewer infrastructure had become critical, so the timeline for residents to vacate the town was moved up by two years.
Like all the buildings in Creighton, the land that St. Michael’s occupied was owned by INCO. Therefore, the church did not escape the need to vacate the town.
On the weekend of September 28, 1986, the St. Michael’s priests—Father Sharpe, Father Hutton, Father Fortune, and Father Bourgon—the parish sisters, and the Knights of Columbus Council 3909 began three days of solemn ceremonies to close the church, all in full regalia.
The large statues were laboriously carried down the church’s many steps and placed in waiting trucks. They were then slowly transported to the nearest Catholic church, St. Pius X in Lively, about two miles away. Upon arrival, the statues were carefully unloaded and carried into the church. The procession down the highway was sad but memorable. The church’s bell was also transported to Lively, where it now sits outside St. Pius Church.
Soon after, bulldozers moved in and demolished the entire town, including St. Michael’s Church.

Every two (2) years, the Catholic Parishes of Onaping Falls and Cartier celebrates the Sacrament of Confirmation for students in grades 7 and 8. The preparation for Confirmation classes typically commences in September and takes place at the parish hall of St. Bartholomew’s Church in Levack.
If your student is in Grade 7 or 8, please contact the Parish office to register your child for Confirmation. If your child is a student at St-Étienne-Martyr School in Dowling, you do not need to call and register. You will have the opportunity to register at the school in September.
Adults wishing to prepare and receive the Sacrament of Confirmation are also welcome to contact the parish.

Being a Godparent is much more than a position of honor at a person’s baptism. The role of a Godparent is to continue the care and Catholic upbringing of the person being baptized in the event that the parents are no longer able to do so. It is a responsibility that should not be taken lightly. Ideally, in the case of an underage person being baptized, legal provisions should be made by the parents to ensure custody is given to the Godparents should something happen to the parents.

The Levack Council of the Knights of Columbus has, since 2023, purchased and distributed coats in our community.
Overview. Beginning in 2008, the Knights in Ontario have raised funds to provide winter coats to children in need. Since then, tens of thousands of dollars have been raised and approximately 100,000 coats have been donated to the children throughout the province. The process is simple, donations are collected by local Knights of Columbus councils and the State Council, and bulk orders are made and then distributed through the various school boards before the onset of winter each year. Help us keep our children warm in the winter and get them in school.

The Knights of Columbus, Levack Council 11565, is proud to annually sponsor the Knights’ “Free Throw Basketball Championship” council-level program for Levack and Larchwood public school students aged nine to fourteen.
Winners of the District Level competition have the opportunity to advance to the District championships in Sudbury. Winners at the District Level then have the opportunity to advance to the Regional Championship Level.
Since 1972, councils have sponsored the “Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship” for boys and girls from the ages of nine (9) to fourteen (14) to provide an athletic outlet and encourage the values of sportsmanship and healthy competition. Kids compete within their own gender and age and progress from local level to district, regional and state/province competitions. This program is a great way to introduce the Order to your community and recruit faithful family men of service.
The Free Throw Championship program is part of the Knights’ “Faith in Action—Community Services” program.

Council 11565 in Levack (St. Bartholomew Roman Catholic Church) is one of 16,000 Knights of Columbus councils that make up the world’s largest Catholic fraternal service organization. Founded in 1882 to assist working-class and immigrant Catholics in the United States, today the approximately two million members of the Knights put their faith into action through a broad range of charitable causes locally, nationally and internationally with financial contributions and hands-on service.

Entre 1883 et 1925, la région située entre Sudbury et Chapleau relève de la paroisse Sainte-Anne-des-Pins de Sudbury. Between 1883 and 1925, the area between Sudbury and Chapleau fell under the pastoral care of Sainte-Anne-des-Pins Parish in Sudbury. Sainte-Anne-des-Pins established mission churches all along the CPR rail line between Sudbury and Chapleau, including Cartier and Biscotasing. The number of priests were few, however, they managed to provide Sunday Mass in each area at least once a month. The following is a list of priests that served the area between Sudbury and Chapleau.

The applicant must be a child or grandchild of a Knight in the Levack Council of the Knights of Columbus who is in good standing and current in membership.
The applicant must provide proof of application to a post secondary education institution. The application must include the name and address of the institution. Qualifying institutions can be a university, college, trade school or seminary.
The applicant must provide proof that they have completed their required number of secondary school volunteer hours.
The applicant must provide proof of volunteer hours performed above and beyond secondary school requirements.
The applicant may provide any other pertinent information that they would like to be considered in the councils decision to grant a bursary.
The amount of the bursary as well as the number of bursaries may very from year to year.
The financial situation of the parents of the applicant has no influence on a decision for or against the eligibility for a bursary.

Our parish churches were all, at one time, independent parishes serving the specific English and French language requirements of our communities. Today, all three churches are now one parish, and we are a bilingual parish serving our community’s English and French-speaking Catholics.

Mary est née à Biscotasing le 10 septembre 1919 de Herman Frank Kohls (1877-1960) et de Mary Louise Kohls (née Staaga) (1882-1968). Mary était l’une des 14 enfants de la famille et a vécu à Biscotasing toute sa vie. Mary a passé de nombreuses années à s’occuper du cimetière de Biscotasing avant de passer le relais à Hector St-Denis. Mary est décédée le 7 février 2014 et repose maintenant dans le cimetière qu’elle a aidé à entretenir pendant tant d’années.
Mary was born in Biscotasing on September 10, 1919, to Herman Frank Kohls (1877-1960) and Mary Louise Kohls (nee Staaga) (1882-1968). Mary was one of 14 children and lived in Biscotasing all her life. Mary spent many years looking after the cemetery in Biscotasing before handing the job to Hector St-Denis. Mary passed away on February 7, 2014, and rests now in the graveyard that she helped look after for so many years.

Hector est né à Biscotasing en 1934 d’Emile St. Denis (1890-1965) et d’Alice Michaud (1902-????). Hector est l’un des huit enfants de la famille. Hector a vécu par intermittence à Biscotasing tout au long de sa vie. Il a été longtemps gardien du cimetière de Biscotasing avant son décès le 21 janvier 2022. Hector repose maintenant dans le cimetière dont il s’est occupé pendant tant d’années.
Hector was born in Biscotasing in 1934 to Emile St. Denis (1890-1965) and Alice Michaud (1902-????). Hector was one of eight children. Hector lived on and off in Biscotasing throughout his lifetime. Hector was a long time caretaker of the cemetery in Biscotasing before his death on January 21, 2022. Hector now rests in the cemetery that he looked after for so many years.

Le cimetière catholique de Cartier appartient à la paroisse d’Onaping Falls et de Cartier, qui en assure sa gestion. L’entretien du cimetière est effectué conformément à la Loi de 2002 sur les services de funérailles, d’enterrement et de crémation (la Loi) et au Règlement de l’Ontario 30/11 (le Règlement).
Pour obtenir des informations sur l’achat d’une concession funéraire et/ou pour organiser un enterrement, veuillez contacter le bureau de la paroisse. Vous pouvez contacter le gardien du cimetière dont le nom figure dans le bulletin paroissial pour des questions d’ordre général.

The Cartier Catholic Cemetery is owned and operated by the Parish of Onaping Falls and Cartier. The care and maintenance of the cemetery is carried out in accordance with the “Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services Act, 2002” (Act) and Ontario Regulation 30/11 (Reg).
For information on the purchase of a burial plot and/or to arrange for a burial, please contact the parish office. You can contact the cemetery caretaker listed in the parish bulletin for general inquires.
The purchase price of burial lots, donations to the cemetery, and any other fees collected are contributed to the “Cartier Cemetery Trust Fund”. This Fund is an irrevocable trust fund established and administered under the Act. Under the Act, certain percentages of all monies contributed to the Trust cannot be withdrawn. This is to ensure that there are always funds available to earn income (i.e. bank and investment interest paid on balances). Income from the Trust fund is used to provide general care and maintenance of the Cemetery in perpetuity. Extraordinary costs incurred in the upkeep of the cemetery may be drawn from the Trust as provided by the Act.
Donations to the Cartier Cemetery Trust Fund are always welcome and helps ensure the cemetery is maintained into the future. Donations should be made to the “Cartier Cemetery Trust Fund, care of The Parish of Onaping Falls and Cartier” and sent to the Parish office. All donations are tax deductible and a tax receipt will be issued.
Every effort has been made to ensure the accuracy of the lists of persons interned in the Benny and Cartier (Catholic) Cemeteries. However, due to errors in death certificates, errors in the original cemetery registries, errors in people’s memories, and ambiguities found in the existing records, some persons listed in one cemetery (Old Benny Church Cemetery, the new Benny cemetery, and the Cartier Catholic Cemetery) may actually be interned in one of the other two cemeteries or on private lands in and around Benny. In addition, the lists presented here may not be complete and represents only those names that the webmaster has been able to find with a fairly high degree of confidence.

Mile 94.7 CPR Cartier Subdivision
Larchwood Station est à l’origine un petit village situé le long de la voie ferrée au nord de Chelmsford, en Ontario. La gare était située à environ un mille de la voie ferrée, à l’est de la route 144. Le point milliaire de la gare est le point 94,7 de la subdivision Cartier.
Une église catholique et une école publique se trouvent à quelques pas de la gare. De l’autre côté de la rue de l’église se trouve un magasin général. L’église a brûlé dans les années 1960.
La famille Byrnes, la famille Self, la famille Savage et la famille Book comptent parmi les premiers colons de la région (vers 1910 et avant). Certaines familles vivaient dans d’anciens poulaillers qui avaient été transformés en habitation.
Avant les années 1970, la route 144 traversait la voie ferrée à un passage à niveau. Aujourd’hui, c’est un viaduc qui permet aux automobilistes d’enjamber les voies ferrées. À l’est de la route, le long de la voie ferrée, on peut voir l’ancienne plate-forme. Le village était situé le long de ce qui est aujourd’hui connu sous le nom de Pilon Crescent. Lorsque le Pilon Crescent passe au pied du viaduc, on peut voir les fondations de l’ancienne église et de la maison Savage.
Larchwood Station

Mile 94.7 CPR Cartier Subdivision
Larchwood Station began as a small settlement along the railway line north of Chelmsford, Ontario. The train station was located approximately one mile down the tracks east of highway 144. The milepost for the station was Mile 94.7 Cartier Subdivision.
A Catholic Church and public school were located within walking distance of the station. Across the street from the church stood a general store. The church burned down during the 1960’s.
Some of the early settlers to the area (approx. 1910 and earlier) were the Byrnes family, Self family, Savage family and the Book family. Some families lived in former chicken shacks which had been converted for living use.
Before the 1970’s, highway 144 crossed the railway tracks at a level crossing. Today you will find that an overpass takes drivers over the tracks. East of the highway, along the tracks, the old track bed can be seen. The settlement was located along what is known today as Pilon Crescent. As Pilon Crescent goes by the base of the overpass, the foundations of the former church and the Savage house can be seen.
Saint Étienne le Martyr

Saint Étienne, (mort vers 36 ap. J.-C., Jérusalem), premier martyr chrétien. Comme le racontent les Actes des Apôtres, c’était un juif né à l’étranger qui vivait à Jérusalem et qui s’est joint à l’Église très tôt. Il était l’un des sept diacres nommés par les apôtres pour s’occuper des femmes âgées, des veuves et des orphelins. En tant que Juif hellénisé, il était fortement opposé au culte du Temple du judaïsme. Pour avoir exprimé son opposition, il a été traduit devant le Sanhédrin. Sa défense du christianisme a tellement indigné ses auditeurs qu’il a été condamné à être lapidé. Saul de Tarse (saint Paul) fut l’un de ceux qui approuvèrent l’exécution.

Saint Stephen, (died c. AD 36, Jerusalem), First Christian martyr. As told in the Acts of the Apostles, he was a foreign-born Jew who lived in Jerusalem and joined the church at an early date. He was one of seven deacons appointed by the Apostles to care for elderly women, widows, and orphans. As a Hellenized Jew, he was strongly opposed to the Temple cult of Judaism. For expressing his opposition, he was brought before the Sanhedrin. His defense of Christianity so outraged his hearers that he was condemned to be stoned to death. One of those who assented to the execution was Saul of Tarsus (St. Paul).

Saint Barthélemy, (épanoui au 1er siècle après J.-C. – mort à une date inconnue, traditionnellement Albanopolis, Arménie ; fête occidentale le 24 août ; la date varie dans les églises orientales), l’un des douze apôtres.
En dehors des mentions de lui dans quatre des listes d’apôtres (Marc 3:18, Matthieu 10:3, Luc 6:14 et Actes 1:13), on ne sait rien de lui dans le Nouveau Testament. Barthélemy est un nom de famille qui signifie “fils de [hébreu : bar] Tolmai, ou Talmai”, il est donc possible qu’il ait eu un autre nom personnel. Pour cette raison et parce qu’il a toujours été associé à l’apôtre Philippe dans les listes de l’Évangile, une tradition du IXe siècle l’a identifié à Nathanaël, qui, selon Jean 1:43-51, a été appelé avec Philippe par Jésus. En voyant Nathanaël, Jésus dit : “Voici un Israélite qui n’a pas froid aux yeux”. Cette identification visait à expliquer comment Barthélemy, par ailleurs inconnu, pouvait être mentionné dans les listes des apôtres, alors que Nathanaël, dont l’appel est explicitement décrit par Jean, n’y figure pas. Son nom complet serait donc Nathanaël bar Tolmai.
Dans son Histoire ecclésiastique, l’évêque Eusèbe de Césarée (IVe siècle) raconte que, lorsque saint Pantaenus d’Alexandrie, enseignant au IIe siècle, s’est rendu en Inde, il a trouvé une copie hébraïque de l’Évangile selon Matthieu, qui avait été laissée sur place par Bartholomée. Selon la tradition, Bartholomée a également été missionnaire en Éthiopie, en Mésopotamie, en Parthie (Iran actuel), en Lycaonie (Turquie actuelle) et en Arménie. L’apôtre aurait été martyrisé par écorchement et décapitation sur ordre du roi arménien Astyages. Ses reliques auraient été transportées à l’église Saint-Barthélemy-dans-le-Tibre, à Rome.

Apart from the mentions of him in four of the Apostle lists (Mark 3:18, Matt. 10:3, Luke 6:14, and Acts 1:13), nothing is known about him from the New Testament. Bartholomew is a family name meaning “son of [Hebrew: bar] Tolmai, or Talmai,” so he may have had another personal name. For that reason and because he was always associated with St. Philip the Apostle in the Gospel lists, a 9th-century tradition identified him with Nathanael, who, according to John 1:43–51, was called with Philip by Jesus. Upon seeing Nathanael, Jesus said, “Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile!” This identification sought to explain how the otherwise unknown Bartholomew could be mentioned in the Apostle lists, while Nathanael, whose call is explicitly described by John, does not figure in them. His full name would then be Nathanael bar Tolmai.
The 4th-century Bishop Eusebius of Caesarea in his Ecclesiastical History relates that, when the 2nd-century teacher St. Pantaenus of Alexandria made a visit to India, he found a Hebrew copy of The Gospel According to Matthew, which had been left behind there by Bartholomew. Traditionally, Bartholomew also served as a missionary to Ethiopia, Mesopotamia, Parthia (in modern Iran), Lycaonia (in modern Turkey), and Armenia. The apostle is said to have been martyred by flaying and beheading at the command of the Armenian king Astyages. His relics were supposedly taken to the Church of St. Bartholomew-in-the-Tiber, Rome.

François Xavier était un jésuite espagnol qui a vécu comme missionnaire catholique romain dans les années 1500. Il a beaucoup voyagé, notamment en Inde, en Asie du Sud-Est et au Japon, pour partager sa foi. Il est le saint patron des missions catholiques romaines.
Saint François Xavier a été l’un des missionnaires les plus prolifiques de l’histoire de l’Église catholique romaine. Il a contribué à l’implantation du christianisme en Inde, dans l’archipel malais et au Japon. Les spécialistes modernes estiment qu’il a baptisé quelque 30 000 convertis au cours de sa vie.
Saint François Xavier a apporté au travail missionnaire plusieurs stratégies nouvelles qui ont influencé des générations de missions catholiques romaines. C’est à lui que l’on doit l’idée que les missionnaires doivent s’adapter aux coutumes et à la langue des peuples qu’ils évangélisent. Il a également plaidé en faveur d’un clergé autochtone éduqué afin de perpétuer les communautés chrétiennes nouvellement formées.
Saint François Xavier est mort le 3 décembre 1552 d’une fièvre. Toujours désireux d’étendre son action missionnaire, il meurt sur l’île de Sancian (aujourd’hui Shang-ch’uan Tao, au large des côtes chinoises) alors qu’il tente d’entrer en Chine, alors fermée aux étrangers.

St. Francis Xavier was a Spanish Jesuit who lived as a Roman Catholic missionary in the 1500s. He was one of the first seven members of the Society of Jesus, or Jesuits, under the leadership of St. Ignatius of Loyola. He travelled extensively, particularly in India, Southeast Asia, and Japan, to share his faith. He is the patron saint of Roman Catholic missions.
St. Francis Xavier was one of the most prolific missionaries of Roman Catholic history. He was instrumental in the establishment of Christianity in India, the Malay Archipelago, and Japan. Modern scholars estimated that he baptized some 30,000 converts during his lifetime.
St. Francis Xavier brought several novel strategies to missionary work that influenced generations of Roman Catholic missions. He is credited for the idea that missionaries must adapt to the customs and language of the people they evangelize. He also advocated for an educated native clergy to perpetuate the newly formed Christian communities.
St. Francis Xavier died on December 3, 1552, of fever. Ever seeking to expand his missionary work, he died on the island of Sancian (now Shang-ch’uan Tao, off the Chinese coast) while trying to gain entrance to China, which was then closed to foreigners.
